Laboratory Management

During my time as the Research Operation Manager at CAMAL I learned many different aspects of leadership, organization and project management.

Below I have a small examples of documents I created for CAMAL and organization projects I managed.

During research at CAMAL our many metal additive machines are regularly being turned-over for new materials on new projects. We found that the machine OEMs steps for material turnover were insufficient for our purposes, risking cross contamination between builds. These practices had been established but never documented.

I was responsible for generating detailed “how-to” guides to assist the students with material turnovers.

I then fully developed the process and documentation for the Freemelt One machine which is now being circulated to many other users.

I have created material changeover guides for:

  • EOS M290

  • Concept Laser Mlab

  • Freemelt One

  • ARCAM Q10

Training Guides and Documents

Apart from machine turnovers I have made several training documents for different aspects of the AM Process. Some of those topics include:

  • Support Generation in Magics

  • DFAM Best Practices

  • Concept Laser build preparation

  • SOP Templates

  • DOE Best Practices

To help with scheduling organization and transparency I setup a “GAANT” style calendar in excel which is displayed in the Metal Printing hallway to show the printers schedules for the next month.

The QR also acts as a print request form where users can submit a description of their projects or parts and we can maximize machine usage while a certain material is in the machine.

Organizational Systems

I created an inventory system using google surveys tied to a google sheets tracking real time inventory, as well as a handy map for the inventory room

Both of these are shown during the Kickoff Presentation I give to all students at the beginning of the semester to teach and remind everyone on major safety rules, updates to forms or internal systems and give an overview of major projects.

Outside of the labs day to day operations I have also been responsible for the organization of CAMAL events as well as being a representative for CAMAL at conferences and trade shows

Most recently I organized the CAMAL Symposium, an event where users of our facility from across the university come and present their research to foster collaboration and new perspectives. I was fully responsible for find the speakers, invitations, scheduling, catering, hosting and providing tours during down time.
